We raise the Soloman Island and feel that their pet quality is superior to other subspecies. We cannot stress how important nurturing and socializing is for a baby Soloman Island. As babies, they would rather be held and petted than eat. They have fine, hair-like feathers and do not like to be stroked backward. They should be taught the up and down commands very early.

Our diet of sprouts, veggies, fruit, and pellets with a little seed is wonderful for the Eclectus. They need lots of high vitamin A and extra calcium. Refrain from artificial food ingredients since they may be sensitive to them. They eat with gusto, getting food all over their beaks. We use 5 to 7 inch crock bowls for the babies and adults so that they can choose which item they want to eat. They thoroughly enjoy the bright colors of the food.

Eclectus also need high humidity and baths, daily if possible, to maintain their lovely feathers and healthy skin.

A statement that you may hear is: "Females don't make good pets." Our experience with the Eclectus is a very positive one. Our early nurturing and socialization program with our babies has gone a long way to do away with that myth. We have found they need an environment with lots of intensely colored hanging toys. They enjoy observing the activity going on around them and just being with you. And, they can be taught to sing! My daughter, Stacey, taught her S.I. Female, "Camille", to sing using la,la to the music. Eclectus are not well known with their singing capabilities. She would also say "Hello" to everyone going by the porch in the apartment complex. They have a very small, sweet sounding voice. The Eclectus has marvelous pet potential with a lot of patience and understanding.
