All Cockatoos are individuals with their own strong personalities. When they are young, it is very important to encourage independence. All babies need the right kind of attention when they are young. To spoil a Cockatoo you need merely to cuddle and hold on demand. As a Breeder, hand-feeder and owner we have learned from personal experience they need rules, guidance and security. The baby will grow up to be well behaved and an enjoyable member of the family with nurturing attention throughout its life. We always tell customers to "continue what you start". Cockatoos do not do well with a lessening of attention and companionship.
Timor Lesser They need lots of activity and play things and can entertain themselves for hours with toys. We have seen that they love to play with their feet and also enjoy puzzle toys. They are quite good at taking things apart. They enjoy music and love to dance about. The babies should be nurtured and socialized beginning at a young age. As with most birds, early development is extremely important.
Major Mitchell (Leadbeaters) Cacatua leadbeateri This bird is one of my favorites! Until quite recently, the only Leadbeaters were raised for breeding. We have been breeding them since 1993 and have had great success with pet quality birds. They tend to be quiet and will sit on you shoulder while you read a book, lean against your neck and go to sleep. They do not snuggle in your lap like Umbrellas. They love to play with toys and are always ready to give you kisses when you go around the cage. However, they are not ones to scream for attention. They follow commands quite well. We had a Female, Angel, who always spread her wings with the command, "Show me how pretty you are". They are good eaters and thrive on our diet of sprouts, fruit, pellets and occasional seed. It is extremely important to nurture and socialize these lovelies from the time their eyes are open.
Rose-Breasted Eolophus roseicapillus Another favorite! A true talk-box! They are active birds who need a larger than normal cage for extensive play with lots of toys. They need to be nurtured and socialized as babies and do not tend to gravitate to one person if worked with when young. We have a Rose-breast named Roosevelt who has added life to our house. He always asks you, "What are you doing?", when you come around his cage. He tells you, "Good night, night" and loves giving sugars. They do well on our diet, but caution not to let them get too fat. They are busy birds, so do not expect to be able to cuddle.
