The inquisitive and playful personality of Caiques make them among the most delightful of pet birds. They measure approximately 9 inches and weigh 160 grams. They originate north of the Amazon in the Guianas, northern Brazil, north-eastern and southern Venezuala, and south-eastern Colombia. They live in lowland forest canopy.

The best cage for Caiques is rectangular with a removable bottom tray for easy cleaning. The cage should measure approximately 30" x 22" x 16". Bar spacing of 11/16" will prevent heads from getting caught. Perches are an essential part of the cage and must be chosen to suit the feet of your particular bird. You should include a substantial swing. Caiques are very playful, active and acrobatic. The cage should be stocked with a variety of toys to keep them occupied. They provide hours of pleasure to you and are delightful, non-destructive birds. They are affectionate, even-tempered, very outgoing, and will usually talk.

Their care has been made easier with the addition of a pellet diet. Caiques enjoy almost any kind of fruit and most vegetables. Be careful not to let fresh food spoil. Fresh water is required daily. Be sure to clean and thoroughly rinse their water and food bowls daily. Vitamins should be added to the vegetable and fruit mixture rather than to the water. Water should be provided for a bath. They also like to be misted with warm water, usually once a week. Always mist them during the day so that they can dry before nightfall.

Please refer to the Diet Sheet for dietary specifics.

Cleanliness is important in preventing disease. Avoid extreme temperature changes and improper feeding. A yearly health check by a qualified Avian Veterinarian is advisable.

With proper care a Caique should have a lifespan of twenty to twenty-five years.
