The Amazon has made a very popular pet in recent years because of their intelligence, beauty, personality, and the ability to mimic everything around them. There are variances in the species that make each Amazon a very special companion. From the boisterous chattering of a Double Yellow to the calmer Lilac-Crowned or Cuban. An Amazon can make a house come alive with laughter and singing. They make wonderful lifelong companions.

Amazons love to show off. If they know that you are watching, they will do anything to get you to walk up to the cage and take them out. Double Yellows, Panamas, and the Yellow Crown are some of the more popular birds in the pet trade. They are know for their speaking and singing ability. An Amazon will pick up on any kind of sound. Koko, one of our Panama Amazons, has a wonderful singing ability. He began mimicking a commercial where a woman was singing in a operatic voice. It was then that we found that he LOVED opera. He is especially fond of Luciano Pavarotti. Whenever, the tape is played, Koko will sing for hours. His tail feathers become fanned and he swoons to the music. He just loves it!

An Amazon should have a cage that is big enough for them to move and play with a variety of toys. The cage should be square or rectangular with dimensions of at least 21"X21"X27". The bird should be able to fully extend the wings without touching the side of the cage. Amazons love to dangle upside down. You should consider buying a cage that has "bird-proof" locks. There is nothing more upsetting than to come home to find your expensive antique curio ruined!

An Amazon require a great deal of attention from the whole family. It is important to socialize your baby well so that he does not become bonded with only one member of the family. Never leave small children alone with an bird. Children love to just reach out and grab things and birds do not tolerate sudden aggressive moves. The majority of bird bites occur due to HUMAN error! Biting is the only way a bird has to defend itself. If it feels threatened or scared, it will bite. Also, never allow an bird to sit on a perch that is above your head. This is a position of dominance and the owner might be bitten if the bird feels that he is boss.

Each specie of Amazon has its own particular characteristics, but we tend to lump them together. Click here for a detailed write-up on each specie of Amazon that we have dealt with.  In general, of all of the birds kept as pets, the Amazons seem to be the most fun to have around. They are highly social parrots that love people.
