Yellow Nape

Amazona auropalliata

The bird shows at zoos, and the like, have highlighted the Yellow Nape as an entertainer. They live up to their reputation quite well. They are outgoing, intelligent, vocal and clever birds. However, they do need rules and guidance to maintain their behavior. The owner needs to watch when the bird becomes over stimulated and allow it to calm down alone before being handled. As babies, Yellow Nape's should be handled by many people to prevent their natural tendency to be a one-person bird. They need to be worked with regularly to teach them how to channel their noisy behavior into talking and singing.

Red Lored

Amazona autumnalis

They have beautiful coloration on their head and face and are one of the most dedicated and loving of the Amazons. They are playful and curious with some talking ability. The ability to read their body language is quite important since they are one of the most excitable of the Amazons. A real fun bird. Supply plenty of toys for entertainment. The young bird should be introduced to many people very early into its development. This is to prevent aggression later as the bird ages. A good diet is important for the beauty and health of your bird.

Tucuman

Amazona tucmana

These birds are not common. They are very gentle birds that tend to be calm and affectionate. They do talk and are quite friendly. It is a shame there are so few around because they are excellent companions.

Double Yellow Amazon

Amazona Oratrix

The Female will have a calmer, steadier personality. The male is more excitable. Double Yellow's are playful, enthusiastic, fun birds. They enjoy singing, laughing and talking. They have fairly easy to read body language that lets you know what they are going to do before they do it. In birds that have been nurtured from babies, they rarely exhibit unpredictable behaviors. The owner needs to maintain a regular pattern of behavior with these birds. Their noise can be channeled into talking and singing.

Blue Front Amazon

Amazona aestive and A.a.xsanthopterex

The Blue Front Amazon may have a considerable variance in the coloration, personality and size. However, they are sweet babies with a great deal of affectionate behavior. They can remain gentle as they mature and are good talkers and singers with proper guidance. As with the Double Yellow Heads, you can channel noise into talking and singing with consistent guidance and teaching.

Mexican Red-Head (Green Cheek)

Amazona viridigenalis

These babies are not known as great talkers, but with early nurturing they can exhibit decent vocabularies. They are rather mellow, friendly, playful birds.

Lilac Crown

Amazona finsch

These birds are quite beautiful when they are fed a good diet. They have slim bodies, iridescent green feathers and beautiful eyes. Lilac Crowns are less likely to be aggressive and have a more mellow personality than other Amazons. They are playful and curious. Handfed babies can talk quite clearly and well at an early age.

Panama

A. ochrecephala panamensis

True Panamas are not common in the pet trade. They are wonderful, mellow birds with very outgoing personalities and great talking abilities. We have a eight year old, male Panama, named Koko. He has never shown any aggression during breeding season or otherwise. He loves to sing opera, but joins in with any musical commercial on television, especially if the singer is female. He livens up the house with laughing, talking and singing. The Panama is similar in appearance to the Yellow-crown, but is smaller with less yellow on head and a lighter beak. The area above the nostrils is light in color.
